First Aid at Work & Paediatric First Aid (Combo)

First aid at work and Paediatric first aid (combined) is an ideal first aid course for those that work in a childcare setting that requires the first aider to have both qualifications. This could include; schools, sports clubs, etc.

This First aid at work and Paediatric first aid course is delivered over 3 extended days (3 x 7 hours) of classroom learning, so enabling the learner to gain the skills, knowledge, confidence, and competence to provide Adult & Paediatric first aid.

Combining the two first aid courses into 1 learning experience will minimise the number of training days required in comparison to if they took both qualifications separately.

First Aid at Work & Paediatric First Aid Combined Syllabus

Understanding the role of a First aider at work & Paediatric first aider in reference to:

  • Preventing cross-infection.
  • Importance of recording incidents and actions.
  • using available equipment.
  • Assessing the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly, and effectively in an emergency first aid situation.

Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who:

  • is unresponsive but breathing normally (Adult & Child).
  • is unresponsive but NOT breathing normally (Adult & Child).
  • is wounded and bleeding.
  • has external bleeding.
  • is suffering from medical shock.
  • is having a heart attack/angina attack.
  • is having a stroke.
  • has bites or stings.
  • has had an electric shock.
  • has injuries to the eyes, bones, muscles, and joints.
  • has chest injury.
  • has splinters, cuts, graze or bruising.
  • has minor burns or scalds.
  • is having a seizure.
  • has sudden poisoning.
  • is suffering from an anaphylactic shock.
  • has diabetes.
  • has asthma.
  • suffering the effects of extreme heat or cold.
  • has meningitis.
  • has febrile convulsions
  • is choking.
  • has spinal injuries.
  • has head, or neck injury.

21 guided learning hours (3 days)

Course Tests

Multiple Choice Question Papers.

  • 70% required to pass this part of the course (28 out of 40) (First aid at work)
  • 70% required to pass this part of the course (28 out of 40) (Paediatric first aid)

Practical Observations.

  • For this qualification, learners must be able to perform relevant practical tasks on the floor during the summative assessment. 100% pass mark required. (First aid at work & Paediatric first aid)

Course Qualifications

Learners who successfully pass all the practical elements of the First aid at work course and then pass the final multi-choice paper will be awarded an Ofqual regulated QNUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF). This is valid for 3 years from the assessment date.

Learners who successfully pass all the practical elements of the Paediatric first aid course and then pass the final multi-choice paper will be awarded an Ofqual regulated QNUK Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF). This is valid for 3 years from the assessment date.

Course Pre-requisites

This qualification is aimed at those over 16 who are able to undertake the responsibilities associated with being a workplace first aider. Candidates between 14-16 years can undertake the qualification, however, they should not be relied upon by employers to be a sole first aider.

Due to the language of the assessment, it is recommended that learners have sufficient command of the English language in order to understand the assessment and to undertake the recommended assessment methods.

It is recommended that candidates have a minimum of Level 2 literacy and numeracy or equivalent.

Learners will be required to demonstrate first aid procedures as they would in a real work environment.

This includes providing CPR to a casualty who is on the floor, therefore be physically capable of doing so.

Geographical Coverage

This qualification is available to candidates in England.

The Qualification can be delivered in other countries however candidates should be aware that the content was developed in accordance with current UK practice.
